Jackalyne Pfannenstiel, assistant secretary of the Navy for energy, installations and environment, announced her resignation Friday for health reasons, the Navy said. The resignation is effective July 1.

"The Navy and Marine Corps are pushing the limits of what renewable energy can do for military readiness, and I've been privileged to be a part of that," Pfannenstiel said in a statement announcing the move.

Since her appointment in March 2010, Pfannenstiel worked to implement the one-gigawatt initiative, an effort to produce or obtain one gigawatt of the Navy Department's energy from renewable sources. She was also deeply involved in Navy Secretary Ray Mabus' push to power aircraft, ships and vehicles with biofuels.

Pfannenstiel also oversaw the effort to realign 5,000 Marines and their dependents from Okinawa to Guam.

Prior to coming to Washington, Pfannenstiel was chairman of the California state energy commission. She also worked as an energy consultant and spent 20 years as an executive with Pacific Gas and Electric Corp.

Principal deputy Roger Natsuhara will serve as acting assistant secretary until a permanent replacement is confirmed.
