ANNAPOLIS, Md. More than 1,200 new students have arrived in Annapolis for Induction Day at the U.S. Naval Academy.

They officially began their "plebe" or freshmen year on Thursday.

There were a record 20,601 applications to be in the class of 2016.

This year's class also has the largest number of female students in school history. Females now make up about 24 percent of the class. The class also has the second-largest number of international students. There are 17 students from other nations from 13 different countries.

Induction Day marks the beginning of summer training, a six-week program.
