PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 90-year-old Navy veteran from Coventry who served in World War II is finally getting eight service awards he was due but never received.
U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse will present Roger Salvas with the awards at a ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Democrat's Providence office. They include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Salvas served in the Navy from August 1942 to December 1945 and was stationed on two warships, the Munsee and the Hull. The senator's office said the Navy granted Salvas the awards when he was discharged, but he never got them.
Salvas was born and raised in Coventry.
