SAN DIEGO — The skipper of the dock landing ship Harpers Ferry was injured Tuesday in a single-motorcycle accident, prompting an early change of command, a Navy spokesman said Thursday.

Cmdr. Brian DeLaney, a 17-year veteran who took command of the amphibious ship in May 2011, remains hospitalized, said Lt. Rick Chernitzer, a Naval Surface Force Pacific spokesman in Coronado, Calif.

DeLaney "was on his way home from work when the accident occurred" about 6 p.m., Chernitzer said. Local authorities are investigating the crash, he said, but he did not know which agency was leading the effort, nor where the crash took place.

The Navy did not release DeLaney's condition, citing privacy rules.

Cmdr. Stephen Ilteris, who has served as the ship's second in command since June 2011, will assume command of Harpers Ferry on Thursday as part of the Navy's fleet-up program, Chernitzer said. Iteris was scheduled to take command in January, he said.
