The military is a familiar word to me. My dad and four of my uncles are soldiers in the United States Army Reserve. My dad has served longer than I have been alive. I do not know what is like to be like some of my friends who have no attachment to the military. All I know is that my dad's military service has taught me to love and appreciate this country, knowing that the price our service men and women have paid is greater than many can understand.
My dad has been an example of what patriotism is all about. He loves our country and is willing to serve, defend and respect this great nation with his life. He has taught me to respect our flag, our Constitution and the things that represent our country. His willingness to serve and lay down his life alongside the rest of the men and women of the military is a sacrifice needed and appreciated.
I have also learned the sacrifice of time that the men and women of our military continue to give in service to our country. They ship to unfriendly countries, leaving their loved ones behind, in order to protect our freedom and safety. Families sacrifice too as they willingly wait for their [loved ones'] return. They train to be ready to go wherever they are called to serve. Their willingness is a learning lesson.
It is because of their sacrifice, I stand up tall when I hear he national anthem. I am proud to be an American and live in a country that is known as the "Home of the Brave." I have learned to be strong through my dad's last two deployments. I have learned to respect others and be thankful for the freedom our servicemen and women give us. I am thankful for the service my dad, my uncles, and every servicemen and women give to our country every day.
