Ladd Anderson

Army brother

Ever since my brother joined the Army I've been interested in military stuff. He has cool stories of training and sends me Army gear.

I wanted to join the Army when I got older, but instead I got leukemia last fall. It's not fun. The chemo and radiation make me dizzy, nauseous, cold, achy, and it made me bald for a while.

My doctors and my mom and dad are always surprised that I don't complain. People tell me I'm tough like my big brother. He calls to check how I'm doing, and tells me I'm doing a good job. That makes me feel stronger.

Make-A-Wish lets sick kids choose something fun to do. I wanted to go to my brother's graduation at Fort Bragg. I couldn't go because I needed radiation and my blood counts were too low. Instead I went on a fun shopping spree. The limousine owner knew what my first choice was, so she called the Army Reserve and they set up a surprise for me.

I was invited to be Honorary Soldier of the Day! I got a real uniform and was sworn in. I rode in an Army boat, and helped put a floating bridge together. I got to order the other men to do pushups. Then I was promoted to private first class. It was awesome! Everyone treated me like a guy. It was one of the funnest things I've ever done!

Cancer means you can't join the military, but I got to be a soldier for a day anyway. If my brother hadn't joined the Army, none of this fun stuff would have happened. He helped make cancer easier to handle.
