MARYVILLE, Mo. — A Northwest Missouri State student has managed to earn his degree just in time to deploy to Afghanistan.
The Maryville school's winter commencement will not take place until Dec. 14. That's why the school threw together a commencement ceremony Wednesday just for Bryce Webb of Winterset, Iowa.
Webb is in the Navy Reserve and learned recently that he would be deploying Thursday. He will be gone a year.
In front of a small group of faculty and staff, Webb received a bachelor's degree in horticulture with a minor in biology. The provost and the business college's acting dean wore traditional commencement regalia.
Webb joined the reserves after completing five years of active duty with the Navy in 2006. He said he loved college and eventually wants to pursue a master's degree or doctorate.
