The jobless rate for veterans of all generations climbed slightly to 6.6 percent in November, up from 6.3 percent in October, while the unemployment rate remained 10 percent for post-9/11 veterans, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Although the economy produced a modest 146,000 new jobs in November, the national unemployment rate dropped to 7.7 percent, down 0.2 percentage points from October, according to the monthly employment situation report. About 12 million people are still unemployed, according to the report.

The overall unemployment rate is lower for adult women than adult men, but the opposite is true for veterans. Among veterans of all generations, the jobless rate is 6.3 percent for men and 9.3 percent for women. Among post-9/11 veterans, the jobless rate is 9.5 percent for men and 12.9 percent for women.

Jobs created in November came mostly in retail, professional and business services, and health care, the Labor Department reported.

The Defense Department is in the midst of an initiative to beef up and individualize transition assistance training for separating and retiring service members, a move aimed at helping them find better jobs and use their military-learned skills in leadership and occupational fields.
