TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — An Alabama businessman and a former U.S. Coast Guard administrator are facing prison time in a scheme involving fake and inflated federal contracts.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that 52-year-old Huffman Earl “Butch” Monk of Brookwood and 30-year-old Nathan Dunn, a former Coast Guard transportation administrator, will be sentenced next month in federal court in Virginia.

Both pleaded guilty earlier this year to bribery and wire fraud charges. The men face up to 20 years in prison.

Monk owns and operates 12 freight brokerage companies based in Brookwood. He contracted with the government to ship military-related freight.

The government says Monk paid Dunn $220,000 in bribes during a two-year period and cost the Coast Guard more than $1 million.
