SAN DIEGO — A giant Navy warship has been drydocked in San Diego for a $150 million overhaul.

U-T San Diego reports that the amphibious assault ship Essex arrived at the General Dynamics-NASSCO drydock Sunday night. The ship, which carries Harrier jets and helicopters, is 844 feet long and 20 stories tall, making it one of the largest jobs undertaken at the shipyard.

This is the first time the vessel has been fully out of the water in 12 years, and refitting could take months.

Money for the project was appropriated before sequestration kicked in, but the Navy said maintenance on eight other ships could be deferred.
