CHATHAM, Mass. — One of the country’s few remaining motorized Coast Guard surfboats is being restored on Cape Cod.
The Cape Cod Times reports that South Dennis resident Dick Boonisar donated the 26-foot wooden boat to the Cape Cod National Seashore.
The boat is thought to date to the 1940s. Richard Ryder, a volunteer who is helping restore the boat, estimated there are only about three motorized surfboats left in the country.
The boat was part of the Nauset Coast Guard Station in Eastham, and Boonisar bought the boat from an Eastham man in 1973.
But Boonisar said maintaining and storing the two-ton boat got to be too much of a chore. He eventually offered it to the seashore, figuring it would take good care of the craft.
