Senators: Navy identifies funding for Miami repair

KITTERY, Maine — U.S. senators from Maine and New Hampshire say the Navy has identified funding needed to move forward with repairs to the USS Miami. The submarine sustained $450 million in damage last year in a fire started by a worker at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The senators said Friday that the 2013 Defense appropriations bill included $150 million for repairs to the USS Miami. They said the bill was included in the resolution passed in the Senate on March 20 and signed into law.

Last month, officials said the Navy's commitment to repairing the nuclear submarine was wavering under the realities of mandatory budget cuts.

James Fury, who set the fire last May, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
