FORT KNOX, Ky. — A new unit of soldiers is expected to arrive at Fort Knox later this year.

Fort Knox spokesman Kyle Hodges told The News-Enterprise that the Germany-based 42nd Clearance Company plans to transition about 150 soldiers to the central Kentucky post by October. Officials say the company will serve as a subordinate unit to the 19th Engineers Battalion.

Fort Knox garrison commander, Col. Bruce Jenkins, said the addition strengthens the 19th Engineers and makes it the largest engineer battalion in the Army.

He said the company will benefit because Fort Knox offers better ranges and infrastructure that Bamburg, Germany.

"As the unit's primary missions are area and route clearance of explosive hazards, Fort Knox's extensive network of ranges and training areas will provide the perfect platform for the unit to train in real-world environments and enhance its skill sets," said 42nd Clearance Company Commander Capt. Eder Ramirez in a statement. "In addition, Fort Knox's quality infrastructure, housing and recreation offerings will provide a fantastic place for our soldiers and family members to live, work and play."

The newspaper reports the relocation will also bring about 200 family members of soldiers to the area, which create an economic impact of around $6 million.
