Navy: Powder found in NSF Arlington mailroom not toxic

Tests on a white, powdery substance found Thursday morning in the mailroom of a Navy facility in Arlington, Va., revealed it was not dangerous, according to a Navy official, and the 800 people previously evacuated were allowed to return to work.

Staffers at Naval Support Facility Arlington’s Building 12, which houses the offices of the chief of naval personnel, re-entered the building about an hour after the threat was first reported, the official said.

Arlington County fire department and hazardous-materials officials, as well as Navy personnel, remain on the scene investigating. No further details about the origin or makeup of the substance were immediately available.

The incident comes just days after letters that tested positive for the poison ricin were mailed to President Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss, in Washington. The FBI arrested Mississippi resident Paul Kevin Curtis in connection with the letters Wednesday night, an FBI release said.
