Firefighters at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., determined no danger was posed to the public by a hazardous material incident this afternoon on Brookley Avenue, according to the base Twitter account.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene about 4 p.m. today after a report of a suspicious substance. They do not yet know what the substance is, said base spokesman Joe Cirone. Further details were not immediately available.
Earlier on Tuesday, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters that a letter with the poisonous substance ricin was sent to the base.
“He said that statement before our fire department made entry, so I’m not sure where he’s getting the information from,” Cirone said.
The base was not evacuated during the incident, he said
