PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A 92-year-old veteran from Bristol who served in the Army during World War II has received long-overdue medals for his service.
U.S. Rep. David Cicilline on Tuesday presented Arthur Medeiros with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals he earned but never got.
Medeiros was a 22-year-old resident of Pawtucket when he enlisted in the Army in 1942. He was injured during the Battle of the Bulge, treated in a military hospital and later returned to his unit. He received an honorable discharge in 1945.
Medeiros says that, after 70 years, he thought this day might never come but he is happy it has.
The Democratic congressman called Medeiros a “true hero” who put his life on the line to protect the country.
