BISMARCK, N.D. — Chief Warrant Officer 4 Shelly Sizer will become the first woman named to the post of state command chief warrant officer, the North Dakota National Guard said Thursday.

Sizer, of Bismarck, will take the job during a Saturday afternoon change of responsibility ceremony at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck, the Bismarck Tribune reported.

She’ll replace Chief Warrant Officer 5 David Jundt, who retired from the position after 42 years of service.

Warrant officers are considered the Army’s technical experts in work, training and education.

Sizer enlisted in 1978, serving in the personnel section of the former headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion in Valley City.

She advanced to the rank of staff sergeant before transferring to the Headquarters Detachment of the 231st Engineer Battalion in Bismarck, where she was promoted to the rank of warrant officer 1.

Sizer served at the Regional Training Institute in Devils Lake before returning to Bismarck in 2000. She deployed to Kosovo in 2010.

Jundt, of Bismarck, joined the North Dakota Army National Guard in 1971 as a construction equipment mechanic. He served in several maintenance roles in different units and rose to the rank of sergeant first class before becoming a chief warrant officer 2 in October 1985.

Before being named the state’s second-ever state command chief warrant officer in April 2005, he served with the Command Maintenance Evaluation Team, known as the COMET.
