WESTMINSTER, MASS. — The post office in Westminster has been named in honor of a local Army officer killed in Iraq.

The building was named Thursday for 1st Lt. Ryan Patrick Jones in a ceremony attended by his mother and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray.

Jones was 23 when he was killed by a homemade bomb in Baghdad in May 2007.

The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester reported that his mother, Elaine Jones, said all who served in Iraq deserve recognition.

Westminster Postmaster Kathryn Callahan said Jones excelled in academics, sports and as a classic pianist and his character and spirit would live on through the dedication.

Jones’ commanding officer in Iraq, Col. Joseph Birchmeier, said Jones was dedicated to his job of finding and dismantling improvised explosive devices.
