An Air Force Academy professor and department head has been tapped to be the next dean of faculty.

Col. Andrew Armacost, a permanent professor and head of the Department of Management at the Academy, will assume the faculty leadership position from Brig. Gen. Dana Born.

Born, who has been dean of faculty since October 2004, will retire later this year and join the faculty of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, according to a release from the Academy.

As dean of faculty, Armacost will command a faculty of 700 and oversee the yearly design and instruction of more than 500 undergraduate courses for approximately 4,000 cadets in 31 academic disciplines, according to the release. He will also direct the operation of five support staff agencies and faculty resources involving more than $350 million.

“Being selected as the U.S. Air Force Academy’s 10th dean of the faculty is a tremendous honor,” Armacost said in the release. “I am thrilled to lead a great organization consisting of a remarkable faculty and staff.”

Armacost was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Northwestern University where he received his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1989. He also holds a master’s degree and doctorate in operations research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed his Air Force officer professional military education training through the Air University including Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College. Armacost has served at the Academy as an instructor, a professor and has been a permanent professor since 2000 and department head since 2008, according to the release.

Prior to his latest stint at the Academy, Armacost’s assignments included chief analyst at Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. His early career, which began in 1989 at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., included his role as program manager for projects with the White House Communications Agency and the Marine Corps Intelligence Center in Quantico, Va.
