Dads generally help their children with science projects or those first driving lessons. For David Herron, dressmaking was on his to-do list.

On April 27, his daughter walked out of the house in a “snow white camouflage” prom dress designed and created by Herron.

“It took me about six weeks to make the dress, a couple days here, a couple days there,” Herron said in an interview with Air Force Times. A truck driver by night, he spread his time out as best he could.

Herron, who now lives in Marshfield, Wisc., served in the Air Force from 1986 to 1991, and was the “equivalent of a senior airman.”

He had a few sewing tricks up his sleeve from hemming his uniforms, but this became a whole new project.

“Mariah jokingly questioned me making it, and I jokingly answered back that I would do it. Next thing I know, I was making her dress,” Herron said.

He said Mariah, 17, is active and loves the outdoors, so she picked the snow white camouflage look, which is white and patterned with tree limbs and leaves.

“When we went to Hancock Fabrics, we actually saw that the roll of fabric was too short, so we had to order more,” he said.

Herron said the pattern was in high demand for the winter hunting season.

“When I was in the middle of making it, Mariah said, ‘If this turns out, you can make my wedding dress.’ I told her we needed to see how this turned out first.”

The pieces soon came together to make the strapless, black satin waisted gown with black tulle and a thin black ruffle trim on the top.

An added bonus, Herron also created a black satin bow and added the tops of shotgun shells as “buttons instead of flowers.”

She wore distressed leather cowboy boots to go along with the outfit.

But that’s not all.

Mariah’s date also complimented her look by wearing a snow white camouflage tie atop of his black shirt and black pants to the prom.

“I couldn’t make the tie, those are a bit more difficult to make, so she had found his tie online. But it was the exact same,” Herron said.
