The Defense Department announced a three-star nominee Friday, while the Navy announced five one-star assignments:
Rear Adm. Nora Tyson has been selected for her third star and will become the deputy commander of Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.
Tyson was the first female commander of a Navy carrier strike group when she became the commander of Carrier Strike Group 2 in 2010.
Tyson has also commanded the amphibious assault ship Bataan and lead the Navy’s disaster-relief efforts on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. She has also deployed twice to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Tyson is currently the vice director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon.
Rear Adm. Robert Girrier will be the deputy and chief of staff, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Girrier is currently serving as director for operations, U.S. Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.
Rear Adm. James Cloyd will be the director, maritime operations (N3/N5/N2/N7), Fleet Forces Command Norfolk, Va. Cloyd is currently serving as commander of U.S. Naval Forces Japan and commander of Navy Region Japan, Yokosuka, Japan.
Capt. Louis Cariello has been selected for his first star and will be assigned as deputy commander of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command and deputy commander of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command Pacific, Norfolk. Cariello previously served as commanding officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia, Naples, Italy.
Capt. Thomas Kearney has been selected for his first star and will be assigned as vice commander, Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C. Kearney is currently serving as program executive office (submarines)/SEA 07 Special Projects, Washington.
Capt. Timothy J. White has been selected for his first star and will be assigned as deputy chief, tailored access operations, S32, National Security Agency, Fort George G. Meade, Md. White is currently serving as commanding officer, Naval Intelligence Operations Center Maryland, Fort George G. Meade.
