SECNAV names 5 ships, including 2 LCSs

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced the names of five vessels Thursday — two littoral combat ships and three joint high speed vessels, all named after cities.

LCS 15, a Freedom-class variant, will be the USS Billings, the first Navy ship named after the largest city in Montana, according to the release announcing the names. LCS 16, an Independence-class ship, will be the USS Tulsa, sharing its name with a World War II-era gunboat, according to Naval History and Heritage Command’s website.

JHSV 8, 9 and 10 will be named the USNS Yuma, Bismarck and Burlington, respectively. It’ll be the first time a Navy vessel has been named for Bismarck, N.D., or Burlington, Vt., according to the release.

The release says JHSV 8 will be the fleet’s fourth Yuma, honoring a city in Arizona, but the history command’s website references three tugboats that bore the name and a fourth Yuma, a river monitor launched in 1865, that was never in active service.
