Adm. Cecil Haney, head of Pacific Fleet, has been nominated to lead U.S. Strategic Command, the Defense Department announced Monday.
Once approved, Haney will oversee a joint command at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., whose missions include cyber, missile defense and the country’s nuclear arsenal. He will replace Air Force Gen. Bob Kehler.
Defense Secreatary Chuch Hagel has tapped Vice Adm. Harry Harris Jr. to replace Haney in PACFLEET. Harris presently serves as assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.
DoD announced two other new assignments Monday:
* Rear Adm. Frank Caldwell has been nominated for a third star and assignment as the inspector general of the Navy Department in Washington. Caldwell presently serves as commander of Submarine Force Pacific.
* Rear Adm. Bill Moran has been nominated for his third star to replace Vice Adm. Scot Van Buskirk as the chief of naval personnel and deputy chief of naval operations for manpower, personnel, training and education in Arlington, Va. Moran is serving as director of the Air Warfare Division, N98, in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon.
