WEST POINT, N.Y. — A new crop of cadet candidates is heading to West Point.

About 1,200 young men and women are expected to arrive Monday morning at the U.S. Military Academy for “R-Day,” which is short for reception day.

The candidates will begin six weeks of cadet basic training, nicknamed “Beast Barracks.” The new arrivals will march, run and have orders barked at them as they learn to besoldiers.

The new arrivals will be formally accepted into the Corps of Cadets at the end of training.

The Class of 2017 includes cadets from every state.
