Navy renews SPECWAR bonus for chiefs, warrants

The Navy has renewed the critical skills retention bonus for senior Navy SEALs — those with more than 19 years — and some of them could collect up to $200,000.

Enlisted sailors E-7 and above, in either the special warfare operator or special warfare boat operator ratings holding a 532X or 535X Navy enlisted classification, and warrant officers from both communities with 7151 and 7171 designators are eligible provided they:

■ Have at least 19 years of active service.

■ Are serving on active duty in the Regular Navy.

■ Are recommended by their commanding officer.

■ Are not under an existing critical skills bonus contract.

Under law, no service member can collect more than $200,000 in critical skills retention bonus or continuation bonus money over a career. The good news is that any previous selective re-enlistment bonus the sailor has collected doesn’t count toward that cap.

E-7s and E-8s can sign contracts for up to their high-year tenure date, or 24 and 26 years, respectively. E-9s and warrant officers can obligate up to 30 years of service. For partial years, payments will be pro-rated.

The pay is offered in three phases.

The first phase, open to all E-7s and above, can take them up to 24 years of service, though the minimum they can obligate for is through 22 years.

They’ll get a max of $110,000: $15,000 the first year, followed by $20,000 and then $25,000 for each of the last two years.

Phase two is for E-8s and warrants for those in years of service 24 through 25. They get $25,000 each year, for a $50,000 total payout.

Phase three is for E-9 and above with 26 to 30 years of service. Their max is $40,000, $10,000 per year.
