Ga. troops return from Afghan deployment

SAVANNAH, GA. — About 100 members of the Georgia Army National Guard are back home following a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.

Family and friends greeted members of the 179th Military Police Company during a welcoming ceremony in Savannah on Friday.

The Savannah Morning News reported Army Spc. Steve Weber had never met his 2-month-old son because he was serving in the war. He stared at the child after taking him from wife Jannah Weber for the first time.

“It’s everything,” Weber said, trying to find the words to describe the moment. “I don’t — I’ve been looking forward to this day for a while now. Now that’s it’s here, it’s just amazing.”

Weber didn’t know he was going to be a father when he and his fellow Guard members left for Kabul, Afghanistan, in October. They spent nine months as the main security force for International Security Assistance Force operations posts around the Islamic Republic’s capital city.

Not long after his departure, Jannah Weber learned she was pregnant.

“When he left, I was about 12 weeks, but we didn’t find out until right afterward,” Jannah said. “So, it’s been tough, hormonal, but through FaceTime we were able to talk almost every day, and he was able to see the birth and to see Gavin through the first part of his life.”

None of the unit’s soldiers was seriously injured during the deployment. Leaders commended the military police officers for their roles in countless security and combat missions.

The 179th Military Police are one of four subordinate companies that comprise the Georgia Guard’s 170th Military Police Battalion.
