WEST POINT, N.Y. — Retired Army Lt. Gen. Sidney Berry, a highly decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars who led the U.S. Military Academy when women were first admitted to West Point, has died. He was 87.

Nan Berry Davenport of Wetmore, Colo., Berry’s daughter, said he died of complications from Parkinson’s disease July 1 at a retirement home outside Philadelphia.

Berry was superintendent of West Point when female cadets were admitted to the academy in 1976. Earlier that year, a major cheating scandal roiled West Point, with 152 cadets eventually expelled for violating the academy’s code of honor.

Berry was born in 1926 in Hattiesburg, Miss. A 1948 West Point graduate, he suffered combat wounds in Korea and Vietnam and was awarded a total of four Silver Stars.
