FORT JACKSON, S.C. — The Army has named an instructor from its Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson as the service’s top drill sergeant for 2013.

Army spokesman Pat Jones said Thursday that Sgt. 1st Class David E. Stover was chosen after two days of competition involving physical tests and drills on how to instruct other soldiers. He was one of six drill sergeants who competed.

Jones says Stover is a drill sergeant leader at the school. He teaches the senior enlisted men and women how best to instruct new recruits.

The school graduates about 2,000 of the in-your-face instructors every year.

Stover is a native of Richmond, Va., and has deployed twice to Iraq during his eight years in the Army.
