COLUMBIA, S.C. — Fort Jackson is getting a new commander next month.

Brig. Gen. Bradley A. Becker will take over the service’s largest basic training base in a ceremony Aug. 27, the Army said Thursday.

Becker will take over from Brig. Gen. Peggy Combs, who will return to her position as commandant of the Army’s chemical school at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Combs has been interim commander at Fort Jackson since Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts was relieved of command earlier this month because of misconduct. Suspended in May over charges of adultery and involvement in a physical altercation, the one-star general was removed after an investigation by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Becker, who joined the Army as a second lieutenant in 1986, is assistant deputy director for joint training in Suffolk, Va.

He has been deployed three times to Iraq and served in Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm. He also has served in Germany and South Korea.

Fort Jackson trains more than 50,000 new soldiers every year, which translates into more than half of all the Army’s male soldiers and 80 percent of all female soldiers.
