Master's class applications open soon

The School of Advanced Military Studies program for majors soon will accept applications for the class that begins in June 2014.

The online application site for Class 2015-001 will open Aug. 9 and close Sept. 11. All registration and application documents must be completed by Sept. 11 so that interviews for this competitive program can be completed in mid-September. Selection board voting is scheduled for Nov. 4-7.

The yearlong regimen of study provides graduate-level education in military art and science to midcareer officers who have demonstrated high potential for command and senior leadership duties. Graduates earn masterís degrees in military art and science and will serve 12-month utilization tours in critical battle staff positions with division and corps headquarters. Participating officers incur a two-year active-duty service obligation.

To qualify for the SAMS program, majors must be graduates of a resident or nonresident U.S. staff college or be enrolled in such a course that is scheduled to graduate before the SAMS course begins in June 2014.

The primary zone of eligibility includes majors in year group 2000 and earlier, 2002 and later, and 2001 who have completed a key developmental assignment at major for their branch or functional area.

Warrant officers and Army civilians in grades GS-13 and GS-14 also are eligible, provided they have at least a bachelorís degree.

Class 2015-001 is projected to have 112 seats, with 84 going to Army officers, 14 to sister service selects, seven to interagency selects and seven to foreign officers.
