PASCAGOULA, MISS. — Gen. James Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, will speak Friday at a keel authentication ceremony at Ingalls Shipbuilding for the company’s 11th LPD 17 Class amphibious transport dock ship Portland (LPD 27).

Amos’ wife, Bonnie, is the ship’s sponsor and she will have her initials welded onto a keel plate to authenticate the keel of LPD 27 has been “truly and fairly laid.”

Ingalls has delivered eight ships in the LPD 17 class to the Navy. The Somerset (LPD 25) and John P. Murtha (LPD 26) are currently under construction.

The ships are built to deploy the combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. The ships are 684 feet long and can carry up to 800 troops.
