Reserve trims re-up bonus list

Reserve explosive ordnance disposal technicians don't qualify for re-enlistment bonuses under the new list, so those who want one need to act fast. The Navy Reserve has released the first update to re-enlistment bonuses in more than a year and a half, adding two brand-new ratings, tweaking some existing rating/skill/paygrade combinations and eliminating a dozen bonus offerings outright.

NAVADMIN 197/13, released Aug. 6, outlined the updates and stated that all increased levels and additions to the list are in effect immediately. Those in rating, skill and paygrade combinations eliminated have until Sept. 5 to ship over and collect a bonus at the old levels.

New to the list are aerographer’s mates with the 7412 (analyst-forecaster) Navy enlisted classification in Zones B and C, meaning anyone between eight and 20 years of service who re-enlists for six years can qualify for a maximum of $7,500.

In addition, all legalmen second class with less than 14 years of service — in Zones A and B — qualify for the highest bonus level, $15,000, if they obligate for six years.

Sailors accustomed to active duty re-up zones also need to be aware that Reserve re-up zones are different — Zone A covers up to eight years, B runs to 14 years and C up to 20 years of service.

Twelve rating, skill and paygrade combinations are no longer on the list. Most notable are first and second class explosive ordnance disposal technicians, who have been fixtures on the Reserve bonus lists for decades.

Another rating/NEC combo, equipment operators with the 5710 NEC (advanced equipment operator), saw Zone A and B six-year re-up bonuses drop from $10,000 to $7,500; and the situation is the same for many others, so sailors need to act fast to lock in the old rates.

Other rating/skill combo changes brought good news for eligible sailors. All special warfare operators and special warfare boat operators in paygrades E-4 and E-5 are eligible for re-up bonuses, for example — last time around, only those with specific NECs could qualify.

The Reserve pays bonuses in a different manner than the active component. Sailors qualify for one of three maximum payouts based on the “tier” level of their skill combination. The money ranges from maximum awards of $15,000, $10,000 and $7,500 for Tiers 1 through 3.

To net the maximum amount, you must re-enlist for six years. Bonuses can also be collected for a three-year hitch. But under the Navy’s rules, a Tier 3 skill would get $7,500 for three years, but if they re-up again, the max they’ll get for the second three-year hitch would be $6,000.
