NEWPORT NEWS, VA. — Another milestone is being marked for the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier.

Huntington Ingalls Industries said workers at Newport News Shipbuilding have installed the third and final aircraft elevator on the Gerald R. Ford.

The elevator is used to move aircraft from the hangar bay to the flight deck.

Officials said work continues on piping and electrical systems, and habitability areas such as the galley and mess spaces.

Construction of the Ford began in November 2009. The ship’s christening is scheduled for Nov. 9.

The Ford is the lead ship in a new class of carriers. It features a new nuclear power plant, a redesigned island, electromagnetic catapults, improved weapons movement and an enhanced flight deck.

The Ford will replace the Enterprise, which was inactivated last year.
