CINCINNATI — A ceremony welcoming components of the submarine USS Cincinnati to southwest Ohio is in the works for next week.
The ceremony for the decommissioned Cold War nuclear-powered submarine is planned August 24 near Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati. Members of veterans groups and former crewmen of the submarine will participate.
The USS Cincinnati was part of the Cold War’s North Atlantic missions in the late 1970s and 1980s in the Mediterranean Sea and Arctic Ocean.
The U.S. Navy approved release of the sub’s sail structure two years ago. Cincinnati Navy veteran Joseph Jaap says another veteran arranged transportation from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard near Seattle.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the components will be displayed on truck trailers.
The 6,000-ton vessel was decommissioned in 1996.
