NEW LONDON, CONN. — A former sailor has pleaded guilty in a 2007 child abuse case in Groton involving his toddler son.
The Day of New London reports that 39-year-old David Diaz of Branford pleaded guilty to risk of injury to a minor Tuesday in New London Superior Court. He is scheduled to be sentenced to up to a year in prison Nov. 13.
Groton town police said Diaz held his hand over his 18-month-old sons mouth and nose to stop him from screaming in June 2007. Authorities said the boy suffered a life-threatening seizure because of a lack of oxygen but made a good recovery and now lives with his mother in California.
Diaz was arrested in Florida in November and extradited to Connecticut to face felony charges.
