DURHAM, N.C. — The Navy is honoring one of the original Seabees who is also marking his 100th birthday.

Jerry Smith of Durham is being recognized as a “plankowner” in a ceremony scheduled Tuesday at the Governor’s Mansion in Raleigh.

Among the people honoring Smith will be U.S. Sen. Richard Burr and Lt. Gov. Dan Forest.

Smith is a plankowner in the First Naval Construction Battalion, which was commissioned on March 15, 1942. He served in the Navy from January 1942 to September 1945.

A Navy plankowner is an individual who was a member of the crew when the ship or command was placed in commission.
