NEW LONDON, CONN. — Plans are in the works to create a commemorative coin to help raise money for the planned National Coast Guard Museum in New London.
U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney is proposing legislation that would require the U.S. Mint to create a commemorative coin that honors the history and heritage of the Coast Guard. The coin would be minted in 2017, and the proceeds would benefit the museum.
On Sunday, Courtney postponed a news conference previously scheduled for Monday at Fort Trumbull Pier in New London to discuss his proposed legislation. That is where the U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle will be moored. He did not set a new date.
The Democratic congressman said he has support from Democratic and Republican colleagues, local and Coast Guard officials, the Navy League of the U.S. and the Fleet Reserve Association.
