Operation Homefront fires employee after finding discrepancies

Operation Homefront officials have fired an employee because of discrepancies in documentation involving the whereabouts of about $36,000 in donated items, said Jim Knotts, president and chief executive officer of the charity.

Officials are still trying to determine where the items are, Knotts said, adding that at this point, the investigation is focused on the problems with documentation.

“While an investigation is ongoing, we have no indications that this situation involves any cash” or additional items, he said.

The issues came to light after several staff members found the problems with the documentation related to where the items were donated.

“The discrepancies originated with one staff member. In order to hold the person accountable for the actions, and consistent with Operation Homefront’s core values to do the right thing, we have terminated the employee,” he said. “I regret deeply that we have been forced to take this action because this employee has been a tireless champion of military families.”

Operation Homefront provides emergency financial aid and other assistance to families of deployed troops and wounded warriors.

“Regardless of role, we hold all Operation Homefront employees accountable to the very highest standards of conduct,” he said. “Given that our ability to deliver our mission is based on the bonds of trust and confidence we hold with each other, and in turn, with those who so generously support us, we had no choice but to take this action.”
