The commander of Carrier Air Wing 17 has been fired in light of accusations he was having an “inappropriate relationship” with a junior female officer within his chain of command, the Navy reported Saturday.

Capt. Jeffrey “Chilly” Winter has led CVW 17 since June. As of Friday, he has been temporarily reassigned to Naval Air Forces, pending the outcome of the investigation, the Navy reported. Capt. Matthew Leahey, deputy commander of CVW 17, has temporarily been assigned to lead the air wing, which is based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif.

Rear Adm. David Steindl, head of Carrier Strike Group 1 made the decision to fire the captain.

Winter received his commission in 1989 after graduating from the Naval Academy, according to his official Navy bio. He earned his wings flying the T-2 Buckeye and A-4 Skyhawk in Texas.

Assignments early in his career included flying with Strike Fighter Squadron 192 in Japan and serving as an instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun).

In 2005, he took the job as executive officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 113 and in 2008 served as commander of Strike Fighter Squadron 125. In 2009, he served as deputy director for strategy, plans and policy at U.S. Special Operations Command.

Winter has flown more than 4,000 flight hours and performed 800 arrested landings, his bio states. Awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, nine Air Medals (one with combat “V”) and five Navy Commendation medals (one with Combat “V”).

Immediate attempts to reach Winter for comment were unsuccessful.
