'NCIS' looks at potential spinoff set in New Orleans

A two-parter will be shot in February and will run next spring

CBS is considering adding some Southern flavor to a very successful NCIS recipe.

The hit drama, which opens its 11th season on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET/PT), will feature a two-episode, planted spinoff set in New Orleans that could become a new series. The episodes will be shot in February and will be broadcast in the spring.

The two-parter will focus on the New Orleans NCIS office, which handles cases from Pensacola, Fla., through Mississippi and Louisiana and on to the Texas Panhandle. As a city famous for music, food and all manner of fun, New Orleans is a magnet for visitors, including military personnel on leave.

News of the spinoff plan was first reported Monday by Deadline.com.

NCIS executive producers Gary Glasberg, who oversees the operation of the long-running drama, and Mark Harmon, the series' main star, will serve as executive producers of the new venture.

NCIS has had success with this formula, spinning off NCIS: Los Angeles, which started as an NCIS two-parter and will open its fifth season Tuesday (9 p.m. ET/PT).

Last season, Los Angeles presented two episodes known as Red that focused on a mobile NCIS team, but that concept was not picked up as a series
