Two reporters in the Military Times family of newspapers have been honored for their work by the group Military Reporters and Editors.

Pentagon Bureau Chief Andrew Tilghman will receive the Joe Galloway award at the annual MRE conference Oct. 18 for his four-part series, “Out of Uniform, Out of Work,” about recent veterans struggling to find meaningful employment after leaving the service.

The Galloway award, sponsored by McClatchy Newspapers, is named for a military correspondent who worked alongside troops in Vietnam and received a Bronze Star for his work to help rescue wounded soldiers under fire.

“Tilghman’s four-part series on veteran unemployment is an important contribution to our understanding of the underlying causes and issues of joblessness — and hopelessness — among the soldiers, airman, sailors and Marines who have served their country,” the judges said. “He provides evidence of the unreliability of veteran unemployment statistics and how they underestimate the scope of the problem. In the best tradition of Joe Galloway, he shows how those who have served in the military are hurt by misconceptions about their skills, health and abilities.”

Marine Corps Times Staff Writer Gina Harkins will be recognized as the runner-up in the category of print, domestic coverage, small circulation, for her story about two Marine recruits left in limbo at Parris Island, S.C., for 16 months while they awaited medical separation. Harkins interviewed the pair in secret, and the two were instantly released once the story was published.
