Amphib CO fired, source says linked to alleged bribery scheme

The commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard was fired Wednesday amid an investigation that a source says is tied to an alleged bribery scheme.

Capt. Daniel Dusek is under investigation by the Justice Department, the Navy has reported.

Rear Adm. Hugh Wetherald, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 7, fired Dusek after determining “the investigation negatively affected Dusek’s leadership ability and was a distraction to the command mission,” the Navy stated in a news release.

A source close to Dusek’s investigation said it involves his relationship with Singapore-based contractor Glenn Defense Marine Asia Ltd.

The president and CEO of Glenn Defense, Leonard Francis, and two Navy officials were charged earlier this month with conspiracy to commit bribery. The officials are Cmdr. Michael Misiewicz, the former deputy operations officer for the commander of 7th Fleet, and Naval Criminal Investigative Service Supervisory Special Agent John Beliveau II. Each faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors contend that Francis conspired to bribe the other men with luxury travel, prostitutes and gifts in exchange for information that allowed him to overcharge on port contracts by millions of dollars.

Further details of Dusek’s alleged involvement with Glenn Defense were not immediately available.

The Bonhomme Richard is forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan, where it is currently in port, the Navy said.

Capt. Murray Tynch III, the ship’s executive officer, has temporarily assumed duties as CO. Dusek has been temporarily assigned to ESG 7.

Dusek reported to Bonhomme Richard as XO in April 2012 as part of the XO/CO Fleet-Up program and assumed command June 28.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
