The lockdown at Marine Corps Barracks Washington has been lifted following following a Thursday afternoon shooting nearby at the U.S. Capitol.

Shortly after the shooting, the barracks heightened security and began an accountability sweep to ensure all of its personnel are safe, said Capt. Jack Norton, a spokesman for the post. Norton said he does not believe anyone from the base was in the immediate vicinity at the time of the shooting, which occurred about one mile away, near the Hart Senate Office Building.

The barracks is home to Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Jim Amos and a handful of other top generals assigned to jobs at the Pentagon.

The incident comes two weeks after a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, which left 13 dead including the gunman. The Navy Yard is just blocks from the Marine barracks.

The White House was also secured and the stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the compound was closed to pedestrians. Secret Service said the procedures were precautionary.
