Military officials are investigating a North Carolina-based Marine’s death this past weekend in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department.

Lance Cpl. Jeremiah M. Collins Jr., 19, of Milwaukee, Wis., died Saturday while supporting operations in Helmand province, officials said in a news release. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 2 out of Camp Lejeune.

Collins’ family told media in Wisconsin that he died at Camp Leatherneck, the Marine Corps’ largest base in Afghanistan. No other information was immediately available.

There are approximately 6,000 Marines deployed to Afghanistan, down from more than 20,000 at the height of the war. Collins is the first Marine to die in theater since June, according to, which tracks coalition combat deaths. That incident also is under investigation.
