The Air Force Academy is immediately resuming its shutdown-halted intercollegiate sports, officials said Wednesday.

The nonprofit Air Force Academy Athletic Corp. donated enough money to allow sporting events to resume without using any appropriated funds, the academy said.

The donation comes in time to allow the academy’s home football game Thursday against San Diego State to proceed, although the Wings of Blue parachute team will not jump into Falcon Stadium during pregame events, as was originally planned. The academy said the cancellation of the parachute team jump will be the only notable difference in Thursday’s game.

“We owe it to our cadet athletes and opponents to honor our commitments in this regard,” the academy said. “Athletics is one of the pillars of character and leadership development at the Air Force Academy.”

The academy on Oct. 1 canceled travel for all intercollegiate athletics due to the shutdown, and said home games may need to be canceled as well. The Oct. 5 Air Force-Navy football game was almost called off, but a donation from USAA allowed the team to make a pared-down trip to Annapolis, Md.
