JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — No bond has been set for a Marine from Camp Lejeune charged with an open count of murder in connection with the death of an 11-month-old boy in his care.

Lance Cpl. Matthew Scott Krause of Maysville was also in court Wednesday on charges of negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, abuse and neglect.

Zander Layne Bagwell died July 29 at a hospital after spending a night on life support.

Authorities say the 23-year-old Krause had cared for the boy the night before and that Zander died from being shaken.

Krause’s next hearing is set for Oct. 30. Krause said in court Wednesday he had hired an attorney while in custody after the child’s death.
