Suicides down slightly in September

As many as nine active-duty soldiers committed suicide in September, a slight decrease from the month before, the Army announced Oct. 31.

Of the nine deaths, one has been confirmed as a suicide and eight are still under investigation.

In August, 12 soldiers were reported to have committed suicide; five have been confirmed and the others are still under investigation.

Among reserve component soldiers who were not on active duty, the Army reported eight suspected suicides.

Four of the deaths involved Army National Guard soldiers; the others were in the Army Reserve. All eight deaths are still under investigation.

In August, nine soldiers from this population are believed to have killed themselves. Four deaths have been confirmed as suicides, and five cases are still under investigation.

So far this year, 115 active-duty soldiers are believed to have committed suicide. Of those, 58 have been confirmed and 57 are still under investigation.

Among reserve-component soldiers who were not on active duty, as many as 112 soldiers are believed to have committed suicide.

Of those deaths, 81 have been confirmed as suicides.
