Both pilots aboard a T-45C Goshawk that crashed Monday morning at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., are in stable condition in an area hospital, the Navy said.

The training aircraft, assigned to Training Squadron 86, crashed while making an approach to Sherman Field at the station, Navy spokesman Lt. John Supple said. The crash came at the end of a local-area, routine flight, Supple said.

“We are withholding the names for privacy concerns,” Supple said.

The plane crashed just short of the Sherman Field runway.

Supple would not speculate on the cause of the crash, saying only that it is under investigation.

Supple said the crash was the Navy’s first training aircraft crash since May 30, 2012, when a student and instructor from Training Squadron 22 ejected safely from another T-45C during a training flight 45 miles southwest of Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas.
