A warrant officer who rescued a father and child from drowning received a Soldier’s Medal during a ceremony at Davison Army Airfield, Va., Nov. 1, according to an Army news release.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Thomas F. Oroho was at Panama City Beach, Fla., September of last year, when he heard a woman crying out for help, according to the release. Oroho swam through a rip-tide to try and save a father and daughter who were in the water, and with the help of two other soldiers who also dove into the water to help, he rescued the pair.

Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Ray Odierno presented Oroho with the medal.

Oroho, D Company, 12th Aviation Battalion, said God put him “in the right place at the right time,” according to the news release.

“I’m overwhelmed,” Oroho said in the release. “I don’t think I did anything that any other soldier wouldn’t have done.”

The Soldier’s Medal is awarded to service members who risk their life in acts of heroism performed not during war or conflict, according to Army regulation. The level of bravery required to receive the Soldier’s Medal is similar to that required to get the Distinguished Flying Cross, according to the regulation.
