The amphibious transport dock New York will bring its sailors and Marines to its namesake city this weekend, helping the Big Apple celebrate Veterans Week NYC 2013.

The ship is scheduled to arrive Friday at Manhattan’s Pier 88, according to a Navy news release. It will be open to public visits Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

It’s not the first time New York’s residents have had the chance to check out their namesake gator — the ship, which contains 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center, was commissioned in New York in 2009 and participated in Fleet Week festivities in 2011.

Veterans Week events will run through Nov. 19 and include America’s Parade, which has been held in the city every year since 1919, according to the Navy release.

Sailors and Marines won’t just serve as tour guides — they’ll visit local schools, train with local firefighters and police, march in the parade and attend various other events.

“This Veterans Week visit is a homecoming for us as well,” New York commanding officer Capt. Jon Kreitz said in the release. “We all consider ourselves to be New Yorkers. We all respect and cherish the connection we have with this amazing and resilient city.”
